Florida AAPI Organizations Convene Civic Engagement Workshop

ORLANDO, FL – On July 26, Asian Americans Coming Together (ACT) joined Florida Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Progress (FLAAPP), the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) Florida Chapter, and Emgage Florida for a leadership workshop at the National Entrepreneur Center in Orlando.

The gathering brought together community members, families, and young leaders from across Florida for a workshop focused on civic education and relationship-building. This event was hosted generously by the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida and sponsored by APIAVote as a part of its Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute.

As Florida’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community continues to grow, creating accessible opportunities for civic education and electoral participation is increasingly important. Florida’s AAPI population grew by 48.4% between 2014 and 2024, with 70% of those individuals being eligible to vote, according to data from APIAVote. AAPI voters now represent nearly 4% of Florida’s electorate, meaning our community is gaining influence in a state that is the fourth largest economy in the United States.

The workshop highlighted the importance of engaging AAPI Floridians across generations. Adults aged 65 and older make up 43.8% of the community’s eligible voters, while voters between the ages of 18 and 29 account for another 20.5%. Participants discussed how community organizations can connect these generations and build lasting civic participation throughout the state.

Participants also addressed one of the most persistent barriers to civic participation: access to election information in languages other than English. ACT Florida has partnered with the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office to help provide translated voting materials and make election information more accessible to community members.

Florida’s AAPI communities represent a wide range of cultures, languages, and histories. By bringing neighbors together, organizations such as ACT, FLAAPP, NAPAWF Florida, and Emgage Florida are helping community members overcome barriers and participate fully in Florida’s democratic process.
